Moisture and process stage
Part of the visible plume early in the cycle may be water vapour. Colour alone cannot reliably establish its composition. Feedstock moisture affects heat demand and the time needed before carbonization.
Draft and gas ducts
Channel cross-sections, bends, length and condition affect gas flow. The ducts and chimney are calculated as a connected system; changing the route requires checking the calculation.
Air, temperature and time
Complete combustion requires adequate temperature, residence time and controlled air supply.
Find the systemic cause
Do not hide smoke by increasing draft. Check feedstock, tightness, cycle, ducts and afterburning together.
Describe when and where smoke appears
Record the cycle stage, emission location and timing: initial heating, active carbonization or a change of regime. An overall view of the installation and instrument readings from the same period are useful. A short chimney clip without context rarely identifies the cause.
Check compatibility with new feedstock
Changing to fuel briquettes may require redesigning gas combustion. In one Royal Carbon project, individual small fireboxes could not accommodate the gas released during briquette carbonization. Two kilns were combined with a shared heat generator, revised channels and automation. This was a project-specific solution.
Appearance alone does not prove complete combustion
No visible smoke does not establish the composition of emissions. Assess the operating regime and instrument readings; measure the gas stream when necessary. Operators should follow the installation's instructions instead of adjusting dampers or draft by guesswork.
